Immense crowds in tho streets reverently witnessed the ceremonial removal of Marshal Foch’s remains from his home to tho Arc do Triomphe. As the coffin was carried out from the residence troops presented arms a hand played “La Alarsellaise”, and regimental colors were dipped. A platoon of cuirassiers headed the procession, including officers of the garrison, delegates from soivicomen’s organisations, General Way* gaud, General Gouraiul, and General Baratier, and members, of Cabinet,
The Are do Triompho was thronged h.v spectators as the coffin was placed beside the tomb of the Unknown Warrior .for lying in. state. Tragedy marked the scenes at the Aro do Triompho lute, in the afternoon, where hundreds of thousands passed tho bier. An enormous crowd packed ini don so masses before the vast •monument, was held hack all day with the utmost difficulty by mounted Republican guards with drawn swords and thousands of police mounted ami on foot. They were unable, however, to stem the masses, which finally broke through the cordon, men, women and children bcig trampled under foot.
One mail was trampled to death and scores seriously hurt, and taken to Hospital More than sixteen hundred eases of fainting were treated.
It, is estimated that a quarter of a million passed the coffin At tlie request of Madame Foch, who was anxious to save tlie guard of honor from fatigue-, the body was removed from the Are do Triomphe to-night, instead of to-morrow, and taken to Notre Dame, where it will he watched over by family intimates to-night.
