Glorious sunshine brought record crowds to tlie towpaths, thousands taking up positions before breakfast, eating tins meal in picnic fashion. Cambridge, winning the toss chose tlie” Surrey side. The day was lino, with a fresh south-west breeze. There was no delay. Oxford were a canvas up a minute after the start, both doing 40. Then Cambridge drew level, and got their nose in front. Both crews then steadied down, with the breeze freshening.

At Fulham Palace, Cambridge were half a length ahead, but 'Oxford, rowing splendidly, spurted, and drew up a little, but Cambridge were going easily, and soon increased their lead slightly. Oxford wore striking 3(5 unci Cambridge 37 after hve minutes.

At the mile, Cambridge were a length in the lead and 1 were si ill rowing with lovely’ rhythm.

Oxford at Har,rod’s made another effort, but failed to make any impression, rowing a little rockily. Cambridge were still holding the lead, and drawing away witli two lengths, led under Hammersmith Bridge. Oxford spurted .gamely, but without gaining. .Both crews lengthened out to 32, but Cambridge bad matter's well in band.

. Passing Chiswick which is rather more than half way, Cambridge were loading by 3$ lengths. Oxford were fighting all the way, Imt Cambridge wore stilj well within themselves aiid their boat was running beautifully between strokes. At Dukes Meadows there were six lengths between the boats. Cambridge drawing away at every stroke. Oxford were still rowing well, but were obviously a tired crew.

Cambridge rowing a magnificently rhythmic stroke, increased their to the finish, the official verdict being that they won by =ovcn lengths. Tune IP minutes 25 seconds.
