The lustre ha« worn off the gold mining industry in Queensland, and the winning of gold .is an unprofitable business, according to Mr Barry O’Meara,-a former Gisborneite. non resident in Cairns, Queensland. Durum the past six or seven years pnu - tically ; no gold at all had been won in Queensland, remarked .Mr O'Meara, whereas at one tune from S(J,UUU to 60,000 ounces per month was being produced The only gold mining now, he added, was being conducted by private prospectors and in conjunction with copper mining. Before the war .the wages ol the mmers were £2 5» per week, and at this rate there was a profit in the mining of fine gold at £4 1-fs J 1 id per ounce., and standard gold at £3 17s 101(1 an ounce, but at present, men were demanding £‘6 10,s to £7 for a five and a-half day week, which made the industry quite an unprofitable one. Gisborne has rapidly fallen into line with other progressive towns in the Dominion m regard to homo architecture, and modern and up-to-date bungalows on Californian lines are now to he seen in all directions in the town and suburbs. That ..the bungalow lias its advantages will' be generally admitted. Every corner is utilised, the wastage caused by long passages is remedied, and the rooms are low. with .-ample ventilation. The bride of to-day. in many eases insists on a bungalow, and when a bride insists, there is usually, no further argument. With the low room, however, there comes also a change in the style of picture for Ihe home. The big steel engravings, with the. massive two or three inch frame, has given way to „ the small highly, colored - or the severely, plain picture, with a very narrow frame. Needless to sav, pictures are at present the most popular wedding present. They are always welcome, for they combine artistic beauty with usefulness and when on the wall, they, constantly remind the young couple of the donor. Another large selection of this latest type of pictures has been received by Eastwood's Book Store, corner of Gladstone road and Derby Street, arid a very ;\yide selection is offered. Plain e,tellings, ; framed in gold black moulding, some as largo as 24 inches by 12- inches, are on. sale at from Hs 6d, and hand-colored etchings, similarly framed, from 12s 6d. Gloriously colored pictures, artistic views and garden vistas, some picked out in deliento tones, including the popular maricoM' sev'eS of Venetian scenes, run from 10s 6d -upwards. In many cases, these pictures could not even he framed in the Dominion at the nrices quoted. Inspection is invited, and no one is pressed Do purchase. ■ ' ' •“
