SMART RESCUE

FT. AWANUI INCIDENT.

DOUBLE TRAGEDY AVERTED.

Caught in the eddy of a treacherous backwash on the Ft. Awanui beach on Saturday, two little girls were swept out of their depth into the breakers. The children are supposed to have attempted, to pass along the beach beneath the breastwork opposite the hotel practically at full tide when a strong backwash was in evidence. In a'few moments the children were swirled out and were struggling in the big seas breaking on the foreshore. Their screams attracted the attention of Air. Hvland, licensee of the -Pt. Awanui . Hotel, who promptly and courageously dashed into the water fully clothed to the rescue of the children, whom he brought safely to the shore little the worse for their immersion. The rescue was efiected with considerable personal risk to Air. Hyland whose action earned him warm praise.
