PUBLIC BATHS.
ESTIMATED TO COST £4740.
WORK AS RELIEF MEASURE
The construction of the Macrae public baths is estimated to cost £4/4p, according to figures supplied by the executive of the fund to the Borough Council last night. The Council was asked to proceed with building the baths next winter as unemployment relief works.
The chairman of the committee (Mr F. Toiertonj in a letter to the Council last night, stated: “The executive of the Macrae baths has in hand the Sum of £1G00; by March next year the spin will be nearer £I7OJ. The executive and swimmers generally are very anxious that the baths be proceeded with.’,’ The suggestion had been made and considered by the Council, he proceeded, that a loan should be submitted to the ratepayers, but tins does not seem opportune at this juncture. On behalf of the executive he asked if the Council would allow the LIOUIJ which would, no doubt, be authorised for unemployment next year, to be earmarked for the construction of the baths. This amount would carry a Government subsidy. Following the Mayor’s suggest.on, he had interviewed the Minister of Public Works, who gave the matter very sympathetic consideration, and promised to discuss the matter with the district engineer. The baths, when completed, would be handed over to the and ha appealed to the Council, therefore, to give its sympathetic co-ope-ration. The revised estimate of the hath is !j2olJtl; pump, motor, and piping £2011; dressing rooms to the extent of £• | ,”(K;; extra Jin concrete on bottom £129 ; contingencies 10 per cent. £429: total £4740. The Mayor was authorised to confer with the District Engineer on the scheme, stating lie would lat-et submit a proposal to the Council on the matter.
