MATINEE TO-DAY
tint of its secret storing place from which many outstanding film giants have f come to Gisborne, “Loves of Carmen” will be presented at the Majestic at the matinee today and again to-night. Claimed to be one of the most notable film productions of the year, “Carmen” commands attention: This film, one of the most pretentious pictures attempted in the United States in recent years, has in the princinaJ roles Dolores Del Rio and Victor McLaglen. The cqst includes Ben Bard and Don Alvarado. Raoul Walsh, the director, was given every opportunity to make an exceptional “Carmen,” and he has delineated this striking character in a manner quite new to the sci/een. The director did not want for magnificent costumes and authentic backgrounds. A . Fox representative was sent to Spain for a year, and assembled an. elaborate wardrobe for the picture. The acting of a notable cast, excellent scenic effects and above all, striking realism. make “Loves of Carmen” one of the most effective screen products of a long time. There-is a definite tale in “Loves of. Carmen,’’ ; and it is plaved splendidly before ■ a background of old-world streets,- gipsy camps and Snairsh palaces, and the bull-ring of Seville. Carmen is the gipsy of a cigar faotorv, the fiervtempered wanton, with the languishing, eyes, which work havoc among the hearts of the soldiers. ‘ The a tinea ranee of Lucas, the famous hullfighter, conquers the flirting Carmen, and henceforth she tries with every will to bring him into her train. He treats herewith good-na-tured scorn for a . great while hut even his ruggedness, poor fellow, tails before the attack. There is a big tragic climax to the picture. As supports “Ten 1 Time- MaMa ” comedy ; and the Fox News will bo showing. Box plan at Messrs Tattorsall and Baylv's. .
