NURSE CASE RE-

APOLOGY TO MATRON REQUIRED.

VIOLATION OF SECRECY;

rPreM Association »' ■ AUCKLAND. Nov. 26. Strong comment upon the violation of - secrecy ordinarily,, observed, regarding letters placed in the pobt for delivery was made by members at the Auckland 'Hospital to-night, when Nurse E. A. Blaclae, who was recently dismissed by a special committee for -writing to a .prisoner m Mount Eden gaol, after he had been a patient at .the hospital, appeared before the. hoard.; with a request -that her ease should be re-considered. After hearing the contents of Miss Blackie’si written explanation, members declined to take the responsibility of punishing her. I'his attitude was adopted on the ground that the' document forwarded by her to the nr is oner should never.,,have been placed in the hands of the Medical Superintendent, Dr. C. E. Maguire, aud it was decided that, provided Nurse Rlackie made an apology .to the Matron, Miss A. Taylor, about whom she admitted making a rather indiscreet statement, she should he reinstated* in her former position. Dr. Maguire, Medical, Superintendent, said the. letter was shown to him by- a person from the gaol. Mr. J. Dempsey (a member of the Hoard) said that whoever showed the letter to Dr. Maguire committed a very serious breach of the regulations. . ' \ * Mr. J. Coyle, another member, said, the. nurse, merely said the matron Was soft. and the matron took ; exception to that. “I suppose,-if she had called her a ‘hard bid tiling,’ the matron, would have taken it as a compliment,” lie said. —.“We cannot blame" the girl for an indiscretion and; if the hoard punishes! her for it, her whole life will be blighted.”’ A resolution that the nurse.be reinstated, provided she apologises to the matron, was carried unanimously.
