The Chairman reported that, < after enquiries, it was found that the only course was to re-build on the, site of premises which had been burnt. The erection of the new building had become a matter of urgent necessity as, with the prospect of normal summer weather ahead, there was serious danger of a water shortage resulting from loss of the roof.area. Conditions in the hospital were causing great . inconvenience, owing to the number of patients having increased, while the nursing staff had to lie accommodated in the main building as well. Mr F. Thompson, builder, had gone to a great deal of trouble in preparing a plan and specifications and made an offer to carry out the work at a price that was well within the hounds of the Board’s resources, and well below the previous cost of the same building. At the same time, certain extra accommodation was being secured. So that there would he no undue delay in obtaining the Department’s consent to the proposal, the expenditure was sought and obtained by telegram. After the Bloard members had been consulted by telephone, with the exception of two who were away, Mr Thompson was authorised to proceed with the contract. After .some discussion, tho meeting resolved that the contract arranged with Mr Thompson he confirmed, and the seal was affixed. The superintendent of the National Provident Fund pointed out the necessity for including probationer nurses in the national provident scheme. It was resolved that the two probationers be treated as only temporary for the first year, but that they be given the opportunity of joining up themselves if they so wish.
