MEAT SHIPMENTS.

IS LONDON MARKET MOST PROFITABLE? -

G.S.F.Af. AND At. CO.’S. SHAREHOLDERS’ VIEWS

"Hie''system of pooling of meat for shipment to the London market on owner’s account, inaugurated by the Gisborne Sheepfnrmers’ Frozen Aleut and Mercantile Co*, Ltd., for the benefit of its shareholders, was commented upon with satisfaction/' by shareholders at the annual ’ .meeting on Saturday. .. Instancing the higher values obtained by owners shipping their meat Home on their own account, Mr P. ,L Roberts congratulated the company on the system of pooling adopted. He could not understand; why more farmers did not take advantage of . it. Last season, ho pointed out, by selling on the„Lqjidon market he obtained 3s 7d more for lamb and 3s more for ewes than by cjisposing of the. meat here. The best price offered here for shorn lambs’was from 7d to 7RI per lb last season but. on the London market, they, brought 9J d. The speaker also; congratulated Mr. Dunlop on. the manner in which he had treated the pelts which were. now bringing .better returns to consignors, and the same applied to. the slip© wool. He asked why the company did not send round canvassers to visit - shareholders arid obtain their support to the pool .instead of allowing them to sell their stock to: outside buyers. , The .chairman (Air J. -AY. Nolan), stated that a canvas .of the district had been made to secure support of the. pool and, although one or. two farmers might have been overlooked, ho thought, the staff had done their work thoroughly. Air P. J r RoL-erts) commented that the company now had no blood and bone inanpra in stock and he suggested that a few tons should bo saved for the shareholders, instead of se Tiding it all abroad.

In reply, the chairman expressed liis gratification that there was none of the- manure available. In. previous years, there had always been a great deal of manure left over, but thi9 year was the first in the . history of the company that they had been ah'to dispose of the whole of the stock. There had always been a heavy loss on the manure output up to the. pre sent but, this year, the department would just about pay for itself. Mr Reid inquired what were the net prices received .by Air Roberts for . the meat he sold in England. Air Roberts replied that the lambs brought 20s whereas the best local price was 3s 7d lower and the ewes and wethers brought 225. compared with the best local offer of 13s 9d. Mr Reid: I received 24s for mine in the yards at Gisborne* (Laughter.)

Mr Ri. C. Fisken commented that Mr Roberts had shipped Home his meat on a rising market. He wished Mr Roberts had shipped his stock Home three 3 r ears ago, when he had sold them to the speaker, who had lost 5s 6d a head on them. Air F. Hall remarked that he always! shipped his meat and wool Home and added that the only mistake he had ever made was when he once sent his wool to a' Napier sale and lost money on it.
