COMMONS’ COMMENT ON LORD BIRKENHEAD’S PENSION. >
United Press Assn, by El. Tel. Copyright Australian Press Assn.—United Service LONDON, Nov. 23/ In the Hous§ of Commons reference was made to .Lord Birkenhead’s pension. In the course of a debate -Bill, increasing <( she JautaJa! Committee of the Privy Council, glr. J. H. Hudson said:—
“We are confronted with one _or the judges setting himself up ior auction, seeking positions, making it clear that he is out for a great deal more than he has hitherto received. -V e should make it clear that there is no place for such ‘ a man in a high court- m future. These tilings make people think. I must not He taken as in the leastcriticising Lord Birkenhead, who has taken a course to winch he is perfectly entitled as far as the rules of constitutional practice are concerned. The best check on errors of judgment- should be public opinio n.”
'Mr Wedgwood Bonn said Lord Birkenhead enjoyed judicial emoluments, and earned commerial emolumiants at- the same time. _ Sir Thus. Inskip did not agree.that the pension was in consideration of judicial duties ..being performed at the present time. , ,
