SWIMMING.

SELECTION FOR N.Z. CHAMP

lONSH IPS.

PROPOSED “TRY-OUTS” BY HAWKE’S RAY CENTRE.

(By “Over-Arm.”) The heavy financial responsibilities consequent on representation at iho. Sew Zealand championships is causing serious concern to the Hawkqls Ray Centre of the N.Z.A.S.A.,' as the following extract from' the annual repott gives evidence: — • ; <A In view of the heavy expenditure in sending the representative, team to Dunedin the balance-sheet must be considered satisfactory: It will he recognised, however, that without the. Heretaunga benefit carnival and*the."football benefit the Centre’s activities would have been considerably restricted, it being obvious that a team could not have been sent to the National Championship meeting. It has been clearly shown that donations and capitation fees are not sufficient to meet the regular yearly expenditure and the time has ed when the Centre should devise some scheme to augment its funds. A suggestion has been made, that prior to the National Championship meeting the Centre conduct a carnival for the purpose of holding trials for selection of the representative toam. In view of the fact that trophy. expenses would he considerably minced the idea is well worthy of consideration.”

A carnival on the lines suggested will find favor with the Gisborne “cracks” and will be much more satisfactory than, the existing system, lip to the present the method of nominating competitors for the N.Z. championships has been to .examine the times of each likely competitor, who, if ho comes up to standard, may or may not he nominated by the Centre, , according to the state of the finances. The weakness of this method of selection lies in the fact, that, the time established by the swimmer may have been put up some weeks previously, and at the time of nom-ination-he may" be, unalfe to repeat that;performance. Then, again, there, is the fact that when the time was lakon, the timekeepers had no knowledge of a full sei\so of their responsibilities in regard to qualification for the N.Z. championships, and even a. fifth of a second can. make all the difference so far as standard time is concerned. The Centre’s -proposal, io hold a special carnival for the purpose of selecting Hawke’s Bay .representatives lor N.Z. honors marks an important step, and will meet with t ho approval of all inter-, o.sted in the sport.

Up to the present record-breakers in the Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay district have had no tangible recognition of their feat. This has now' been remedied by tho Hawke’s Bay Centre, who have decided to award special certificates, to all swimmers who establish records. GISBORNE CENTRAL HEADS LIST. The eighth annual report on educational work among the schools of Hawke’s Bay for the 1927-28 season presented by the Educational Officer for the. Hawke’s Bay Centre (Mr. H. i.e Mas)- makes pleasing reading for those interested in the sport in Povorty Bay. Air. IT. Le Bas states:— “It is with pleasure, I am able to report • another increase in the number of certificates issued and another record established, lire total number of certificates issued being 2066, an increase of 97, while the number of schools now totals 43 as against 34 for tho previous year. “It is pleasing to note the increase in the number, of learners’ certificates issued, it being ge’hdrallv found that when pupils have been encouraged to swim 60 yards thc|> have made rapid progress until eb' ible for Merit Certificate (880 yards'). The slight decrease in the number of Alerit Certificates is account'd for by the fact .that in. some of the -larger schools most of tho pupils of the higher standards-now hold. Alerit Certificates and are not. therefore, entitled to swim for another. “Before going into further details of the work done I must express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the head teachers and assistants of the schools and to the sulAcdueational officers, Mr. A. A. George, of Hastings, and Air. C. G. Rigby, of Gisborne. The steady progress of the, work is entirely due to the enthusiasm of the persons mentioned, a progress maintained in spite of the fact that for the past eight, years there has been no financial: support of any kind and everything had to be clones by correspondence,. In spite of the hirtre number of certificates issued only a small proportion of the pupils of the district have, as yet, come under the scheme. With a. share of the Government grant now being available, the scheme calls for definite organisation of the school classes whenever possible. Before the commencement of next season a scheme, will 'lie placed before the Centre which wo hope will cover the above suggestions as far as possible. GISBORNE CENTRE. “This Centre showed an increase of 70 certificates on the-1926-27 season, a total of 570 being issued to tho same. 7 schools. Mr. Rigby, who, waa keen, supporter of swimming and life saving among the pupils under his charge while.in Napier, has carried on the, duties of Silli-Educational Officer in Gisborne in the same enthusiastic manner. The number of. certificates issued to the Gisborne Central School is again worthy of mention, likewise the ■ percentage of 64.5, gained by Gisborne jMarist Bros School. AY AIR OA CENTRE“An increase of 46 certificates is shown here, AVairoa D.H. School, Frasertown and \)pbutama again doing good . work. Opoutanm, where swimming facilities arq, not- of the best, showed a splendid record of 82 per cent, or average attendance NAPIER CENTRE A decrease of 44 certificates was shown hv this Centre, chiefly due to reasons outlined earlier in the report, while the number of schools increased from 11 to 16. Napier Technical College, Napier Central, Nelson Park and Hastings Street all put! forward totals of over 100, while the Technical College showed a percentage of 66.19. , •HASTINGS CENTRE. “Here again an increase of 25 certificates was shown while the number of schools has increased from 12 to 17- This is entirely due’ to the efforts of Mr. A. A. George, who has continually kept in touch with the schools of'Hastings and districts further south. Alahora and Hastings Central showed good totals, while Hereworth School, last, year’s winners of the Davis Shield, has again shown a peicentage of 82.72. “Following is the complete schedule of schools and the number of certificates issued to each. Since the commencement of the scheme 9566 certificates have been issued as under:— Season 1919-20. 203; 1920-21, 348: 1921-22, 876: 1922-23. 1116: 923-24, 1737: 1924-25. 64 (epidemic); 1925-26. 1187; 1926-27. 1969; 192726, 2C66; total 9566.” HONORS LIST. .
