Lvttelton seat and Air. Seddon the Westland seat.
A previous instance occurred in Motueka in 1871. The candidates wore Sir David Monro, who had been Speaker of the House of Representatives lor ten years, and Mr. Charles Parker. Both candidates received 193 votes, the returning officer giving liis casting vote for the retiring member.
It is recorded, too, that some 50 years ago there was a tie in which Edward Wakefield, who sat for one of the Canterbury seats, was eon-c-orried. The returning officer decided in Air Wakefield’s favor, and the story has _it that the decision went by the spin of a coin.

AIR. LYE DENIES REPORT
A denial of the statement appearTiig in the Press is made by Air S. C. G. Lye, Liberal-Labor candidate for liTamilton. It is not a faet, lie says, that lie intends lodging a petition against alleged breaches of the Electoral Act- by the Hon. J. A. l oung.
Mr. Lye's campaign committee, lie understands, is investigating alleged irregularities, but he knew nothin? of it. It is incorrect that he wear to Auckland for legal advice.
