PASTORAL PROBLEMS
ENCOURAGING HOPES IN AUSTRALIA.
GOVERNMENT’S DESIRE TO DEAL WITH CROWN LANDS.
United Proas Aann by El. Tel. CoDJTlehi Australian Preßß Asßn. —United Service LONDON. Nov. 21.
At a meeting of the Australian Mercantile and Land Co., Mr. R. H. Cairo, who presided, called attention to two very important events emanating from two widely separated points. The political horizon, - he said, tended io encourage the ho]>e that statesmen were beginning to recognise the pastoral industry’s value to Australia. He referred to the MacCvacken commission’s report on Queensland’s pastoral industry, and Mr. Bruce’s commission and past ora) inquiry throughout Australia. The rcpoi 1 of the Queensland commission ! ('tokened an earnest desire to deal with the vast areas of Crown lands in a statesmanlike manner.
Mr. Cairo referred appreciatively to the remarks in the reports of both commissions regarding the groat increase in the costs of production, notably wages, and quoted a paragraph in that connection from the Federal Commission’s report. He regretted that the. efforts to interest pastoralists in a well-considered scheme of scientific research had not mot with the success they dcsei-ved, for there still was a wide field for research in the direction of the rcinIroduetion or restoration of droug resisting plants and grasses, t’ eradication of noxious weeds and animal parasites, and the treatment and prevention of diseases.
