The velvet-robed night her sable mantle k ( Spreads slow and soft o’er the silent earth. . Close and fondly folds it round the lone trees, Which, cowering uneasily away, Sigh and mourn for their 1 lam shed lord?—the 'Sun. Mysteriously, the dimly outlined hills Loom gloomily against the star jewelled sky. , „ . . All is" still; but, id the pregnant Last, A wisp of soft grey light wanly, appears, Grows ' stronger, till, shy peeping from the arms Of Night, bright shows the weakly new-born moon. Impatient of Night's arms, she walks abroad, While, fioni her g'owing glory, pale the stars That on the silvery floor of heaven Danced in gleeful sovereignty and power. Stronger she grows, and silvers by degrees - , . Hie grateful trees and murm ring, chatt’ring streams, Which, with silvery arms and glittering rills, Reach out to steal the si.ver soft caress Of the maturing moon. —Laurence Middleweek.
