Henry William McKay, 24, who.already has served over seven years for various crimes, was sentenced at Marton to-day to 18 months’ gaol, being cumulative''sentences on three charges of fraud arid one of theft. The accused deceived business men of Marton, Feilding,- and Palmerston North.' He'was remanded to appeal at Wanganui, where other charges are pending. •’ ' ALLEGED ASSAULT ON CONSTABLE. (ProBS Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 19. As a sequel l to a Saturday night affray at Lyttelton, three firemen, Philip Hock, 21, William Reylands; 28, and John Henry Harris, 25, appeared in court to-day, charged as follows : —Hock, with assaulting a constable; Reylands, . wilfully obstructing the police ; and Harris, lighting a person unknown, resisting arrest, and assaulting a constable. All worn remanded on bail until Wednesday. THREE YEARS FOR BREAKING, ENTERING AND THEFT. FRUITLESS APPEAL FOR LENIENCY. (PreßS Association.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 19. In tho Supreme Court at Auckland to-day Mr Justice Frazer sentenced Chas. William Dalile to three years’ bard labor for breaking and filtering and theft, and two years’ hard labor for false pretences, the sentences to be concurrent. The prisoner made an appeal for a reduction of the sentence, pleading that since his youth bo had never had a fair chance, and offering to make £IOO restitution. The. judge said the prisoner bad a shockingly bad list, apart from.further charges which he said he had been prepared to admit. The best course was to inform the authorities' that the prisoner was an habitual criminal and leave them to decree tlie proper course after the sentence' bad been served.

ALLEGED NEGLIGENCE IN DENTAL OPERATION WOMAN’S CLAIM FAILS tPrf>Bß AsponlationHAMILTON, Nov. 19. H. W. Frost, Ltd., dentists, today successfully defended a suit for £l2l brought by a client, Mrs Janet Hymburn, on the ground of alleged negligence in operating. Frost’s employee (J. O. Kirkland), had cut flesh from tho gum. preparatory to fitting a new denture and punctured two small arteries. A surgeon was called in to stop the flow of blood and inserted a stitch in the gum which adhered to the cheek and the patient had a long period without teeth. Then a second operation was undertaken for adhesion: For the defence Kirkland stated to-day that he had advised the immediate insertion of the denture to prevent adhesion. Two prominent Auckland dentists supported the defendant’s claim that this procedure was correct. The Magistrate l , Mr Wilson, said he found no proof of negligence in the nature of tho operation, the manner of its performance, or the after treatment. Judgment was given for tho defence with costs.'

OBTAINING £2IOO BY ALLEGED FRAUD. ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., Nov. 19. George Robert Hindi, charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with securing various sums totalling £2IOO fraudulently from Ronald Hendrich Nitschke, farmer, of Bonny Glen, pleaded not guilty to all charges, reserved his defence, and was committed for' trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court' at Wanganui.
