FIRES

SAWMILL AND STORE BURNED. BRIGADE STOPS. FURTHER DAMAGE. (Press Association.' ROTORUA. Nov. li. Messrs. Lee Bros I .’ sawmill and general store at Koutu. near Rotorua, was burned t-p the ground and a dwelling half destroyed early this morning. 1111011 the alarm was given the mill was a mass of flames, sweeping over the main NgongotaliaRotorua highway. The premises were outside the borough area, 1500 ft. from the Utuliina stream. The brigaxle’s powerful engine took up a. position on the crown of the bridge, and held the flames back. A fierce wind swept the fire through stacks of timber, threatening the whole area, but the brigade, with unlimited water, stopped The' flames halfway across the dwelling; three rooms were loft intact, while the rest was reduced to ashes. The mill and tiinbor, covering three-quarters, of an acre, was a smouldering mass.
