A German mine laid during the war has been discovered beneath the main railway, line between Paris and Lille. The mine was discovered by workmen repairing ' the level crossing at Libercotirt. They found a formidable collection of German shells, varying in calibre from 3 to 10 inches. and connected with electric detonators. skilfnllv buried under the track. The mine had apparently been laid bv the Germans during the retreat in 1913. but the- wires leading to the detonators must have been cut, preventing an explosion.So that the largest vessels in the world may enter 'Los Angeles harbor. “Dead Man’s Island” is Iteing dredged away. The island, which is conical in shape, 800 foot long hv tbO teet high, was a favorite, dumping ground for pirate loot iti the daws of Selkirk. Those who arc in search of treasure have come peruse Skeletons of some of the victims, and some fossils of the pliocene'and pleistoncene ages.
