There was a very good attendance at tlio Gisborne Chess Club oil Saturday, ‘when the handicaps were openoJ. aggregated and averaged for each competitor in tlio tournament. Owing I i the liberality of the liandicappers, r ho had endeavored to give the weaker players a chance to win tile tropin, fv improving play, tlie result was unexpected, Air C. 1-L Smytlie winning with 64 games, ulus 71 handicap, total l.;ij points. Air. P. Fisebbach closely follows with 4 win, 9$ handicap, total 13$; then Air. E. E. Somervell 6s, G3‘ 12J: and Mr. R. J. Thompson If}. 3. 12] . The winner played exceptionally well against stronger players, but only indifferently against weaker ones Messrs. Dow and Seddon played two games in the final for the championship of the club, each winning one. It will now be necessary for the challenger to win the next game, otherwise Mr. Dow Will be the champion for the ensuing twelve months.
