A large croud, including the Governor-General and State Governors, also several New Zealanders were present. In the Maiden Plate, Gilt Edge was fifth early in the race hut led at the distance and won nicely. It was his-first placing. Ho cost oOUU guineas as a yearling. His owner is A. J. Craig, who won the Melbourne Cup with Bitalli. Parkwood was prominent throughout and recorded his third win, m as many starts, in the Manbymong Plate. His rider was Duncan, who also piloted. Gilt Edge. The winner is engaged in the Derbies. Gothic had a brilliant win in the Melbourne Stakes and'lias recorded three wins, a second and a third in five starts this season. He is trained by the former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. Statesman came up at the 'last turn and finished fast. Strephon had a decisive victory m the Derby. His trainer is Robertson, owner Gfl-een and rider. Pike, who were associated with Gothic’s victory. Strephon cost 52-5 guinea? as a yearling and! has contested six races and secured four firsts. He will incur a five pound penalty in the Cup, making his weight 7.6. Stepphon’s dam, Soldieris Love, .was a daughter of Martian. Pike previously won the Derby on Beragoon and Beverage. Prince Humphrey was galloped on and pulled up lame. It was later discovered that Prince Humphrey had badly injured Ills near hind tendon running in the Derby and he was removed to a veterinary hospital at Caulfield, The stipendiary stewards enquired into the mishap, hut the evidence failed! to disclose the actual cause. It is surmised that the colt was galloped on. Balmerino lost its position at seven furlongs in the race, caused by Prince Humphrey rolling badlv. 'The first prize is £4610. " , .. The Cantata Stakes gave the rider Duncan his third win for the afternoon.
