REFEREE DISSATISFIED
TWICE DECLARES “NO CONTEST’
An occurrence unprecedented in the history of boxing in Victoria was the declaration, df “no'teoiitest” twice in' the same by Mr.. Val .Quirk, refereejl at the • , West- Melbourne Stadium' on Saturday, October 13.
This decision means that tlie referee is not satisfied with the genuineness of the performance of the boxers. Mr. Quirk took this serious step, in the fifth’ round 'of the bout ' C’tween. Chari. Van Roezjon, the brilliant American bantam, and the English boxer, Kid Socks, which failed to attract more than a half-filled house mainly because, by the - form shown in tlie three matches between Van Reedon, Socks, and the Australian bantam champion, Billy M’AUister, the American seemed certain to win. This certainly was emphasised by the manner in which he boxed against Socks on Saturday. It was a one-sided affair all the way, for four rounds, with Van Reedon greatly superior in science, and with every natural advantage'except, perhaps, rug-, gedness. He bustled Socks all over the ring, and the result seemed never in doubt. Yet at the end of the fourth round even money was called in the betting. ; When the fifth round opened Socks was again forced to the ropes. He swung what appeared to be a halfopen glove at the American’s jaw, and in an Uproar of excitement Van Reedon staggered and fell on the canvas. He rose apparently groggy at about the count of six, and in a wild flurry seemed to encounter another right. He again fell to the canvas and rolled on his side, while the gong rang the count up to eight. At that juncture, seeing that the American .appeared unable to rise before the count of ten, Mr. Quirk.
