A thrilling episode in the war-tnne career of Squadron-Leader Ivingsford Smith is told by a- fellow ex-member of the Royal Air Force, who visited Auckland a few days ago. “Smithy” was over the battle Frontin: a particularly hot sector of northern France”, he said, “when his machine suddenly became: uncontrollable. He took a desperate chance by climbing out on to one of the wings and crawling out towards the tip, until stability was destored. Then ho scrambled back to tho cockpit, w ltli tho machine racing towards earth at a, terrific speed. He just managed to ‘flatten out’ and pull the piano out of danger. He landed heavily.but was fortunate-enough to avoid injury and it was typical of liis pluck that he should take part in another . aerial attack later in tho same day. ’
