Mr. R. Barnsdale left recently for a week’s visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of Dunedin, are at present visiting their son. Mr. C. Smith, Stout- street.
Mr. Robert Lansing, secretary for State in the Wilson Cabinet, died on Tuesday, states a 'Washington cable message.—Aust. Press Assn.—United Service.
A number of his personal* and political mends are organising a tribute to Mr. T. P. O’Connor. “Father of the House of Commons,” who recently celebrated liis 80th birthday. It is understood that the tribute will take the form of an annuity, to be paid to. Mr. O’Connor during his lifetime. Mr. O’Connor has represented the 'Liverpool Division in the House of Commons since 1885.—British Official Wifeless. The death is announced from Capetown of Sir Lewis Mitchell, one of South Africa’s grand old men, who. was confidential financial adviser to Cecil Rhodes. He was 86 years of age. Sir Lewis Mitchell was a director of the British South Africa Co., and for many years was general manager of the Standard Bank of South Africa. He began his career as a junior clerk in a bank near Plymouth. He held office without portfolio in the Jameson Cabinet, and was, also a member of. the national convention which led to' the Union of South Africa.—British Official Wireless. ■ ‘
Sir Austen Chamberlaijv arrived at Victoria, British Columbia, on Monday from San Francisco. In the next fortnight he will make short visits to Vancouver, Banff, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, apd .he will sail from Quebec for England ’on November 16. In a farewell message to the United States Sir Austen said: “I shall carry home the • happiest memories of this, my third-.visit to the United States, and my first- to the Pacific coast. 1 pray that, our two great nations may continue to livo in peace and amity, and that they may achieve ever-increasing sympathy with, and understanding of each, other. and that thqir friendship -thus cemented may serve to promote the peace and prosperity of’the world.”— British Official Wireless, *.* •
