RELIEF WORK.
TWENTY-NINE MEN EMPLOYED BY BOROUGH.
Reporting on unemployment relief works in the borough, the engineer in his report to the Council last night, stated: Sewerage Ranfurly and Park roads: The sewer in Park road its almost completed, six men are employed. Reconstruction Parau street, Ranfurly and Park roads: The whole ot the work of Parau street, Ranfurly road and Park road is completed, also metalling of Parau street and Ranfurly road is nearly completed. Gravelling of Park road is well advanced. Four men are employed. Stormwater drainage Ranfurly road: A start has been made on this job. The concrete pipe culvert across Raunfurly road has been laid, and a start made on the open drains through the private sections to Crawford road. Seven men are employed. Kaiti Beach road extension from Scott’s Point: Tlie stone revetment is completed, also formation of the roadway to a width of 14 feet which is. as much as present funds will allow.
'New stormwater drain in the vicinity of Owen road : The second concrete culvert, situated at Tyndall road and Owen road intersection, lias been completed. Small details by way of spillways and disposal of spoil remain to bo clone. Six men are employed. 2 “Upper Fox street footpath formation, 8 chains x 12 feet wide : It- is proposed to form a footpath in Upper Fox street where sewerage and water loan work was recently carried cut. Estimated cost £SO. This will be financed out of £IOOO revenue vote for relief work. Tlie work will dispose of the considerable surplus excavations from the sewer work. Six men will lie employed. Total number of men employed on relief works, 29.
Ohalmois road and Haig road lootpaths Owing to the. existence of special urgent cases in need of relief it is suggested that formation work of the above footpaths bo taken in hand, The estimated cost is £7O. This will provide employment for five men for about three weeks. The Mayor said he would like the Council to endorse the report. There was work stTl wanted for men with five, six and seven children, and he would like to see these men given employment until the freezing season opened. The report was adopted.
