STREET LIGHTING.

ALTERATIONS IN BOROUGH

Reporting to the Borough Council last evening, a special committee, after a tour of inspection of the street lighting system had been made, recommended that as the Council were at the present time paying close upon the sum of £1250 per annum for street, lighting, the installation of additional lamps was out of the question, but in order to effect the better lighting of some districts they, advocated the removal of certain lights from places not requiring them to such localities as under: — Lamp from intersection Desmond and Gladstone Ronds to he removed to centre of block in Desmond Road. Lamp in Upper Gladstone Road, east of Lytton Road, to lie placed in Lytton" Road in centre of block between Bn liver and Childers Roads. Light at intersection of Aberdeen and Lytton Roads to have swan neck turned more toward Lytton Rend to light that street. Lamp at intersection of Stout and Pine Streets to be removed to the bend a few chains nearer town. Lamp at intersection of Peel Street ana Read’s Quay to Graham Road in centre of block between Jvanui Road and the River. v Light at intersection Gladstone Road and Read’s Quay to he remov-. ed to intersection of Owen and Seymour Roads, provided Cook County pays onedialf cost as this is a boundary' road, similar to other I'iouudary lights. ■ In respect to the Power Board s application for existing lamps, not included in list to he added in schedule these were agreed to, with tlio exception of the lamp, Gladstone Rd., just east of Lytton Road, which does not belong to the Council (this lamp could be removed to Lytton Road as above-mentioned). The lamp on Read’s Quay, opposite the Public Works Office, also does nob belong to the Council, and must he deleted from .the ‘.schedule. The committee could not consider applications for several lamps in the cefftre of long blocks as the granting qf them would establish a precedent vvhic hthe Council could not afford which the Council could not afford to adopt.—The report was adopted.
