JOHN WANAMAKER. “Prince of Retailers.” John Wanamaker commenced business in April, 1861. The first day’s takings amounted to £5 3s 9id. Of this amount lie spent £5 on newspaper advertising for next day’s business, and kept 3s 9id in the till for ohange. He maintained that general policy, and built up America’s greatest retail business. John Wanamaker was the biggest retail advertiser in the world. Most of the • successful retailers in America built their businesses on their policy ot putting all their profits back into advertising during the early days of their growth, using principally the “family” newspapers.
