RELIEF PAY.
MARRIED MEN ASK FOR 14/DAILY PREMIER UNABLE TO GRANT REQUEST. BUT PROMISES MEN CHANCE TO EARN EXTRA MONEY (Press Association! / AUCKLAND, Oct. 29.' Couching their request in most respectful and courteous terms, a deputation of six men representing the unemployed of Auckland waited on tho Prime Minister this morning, asking - that married men on 1 relief works be paid 14s a day between now and Christmas. It would help the women to get a few things for the festive season, they told Mr Coates Although unable to accede to the request, the Prime Minister promised that he would issue instructions immediately that all men on relief works’ “would be given a fair go” so that they might have a chance' to earn more than 9s (single men), and 12s '(married men) per Also, ho agreed that men who went into the country to take on contract work ,should be paid 9s and 12s a day 'for a fortnight or three weeks, as- it was impossible for them to make that - money on contracts before they “got their muscles up.” He regretted that men should 'have to go‘ on relief works at all, and it was his desire to make things as hopeful as possible for them by allowing an opportunity to mako more than the minimum rates.
