The havoc caused by floods in the East Godavuri district, Madras coast, was related by villagers rescued after having been marooned nearly a week there after terrible privations. Many were drowned, its well as hundreds of cattle and: goats. Five hundred houses were washed away. The inhabitants of Samalkot have lived since Monday on the roofs of houses and in trees. It is impossible to supply food or effect a rescue owing to the poweriul current from Tuni to Waltair. The main Madras-Calcutta railway, for a distance of eighty miles, has been obliterated and will take months to reconstruct. Immense damage has been caused to roads, buildings, rails and bridges. It is officially stated that 12 railway bridges were.washed away by the Madras floods, which are now subsiding. Mail train passengers at Tuni were conveyed by boat to Ooeomada. The town is isolated.

Rain fell at Karachi to-day for the first time for 14 months, thus averting a serious water famine. This is the longest drought for 20 years.
