"COULDN'T PAY FINE"

_ MOTHER OF EIGHT GAOLED. SEQUEL TO SUNDAY SELLING. ADELAIDE. Oct. 16. Great indignation was aroused at Gawler, 25 miles north of Adelaide, by the arrest of. Mrs. Martha Mary Scars, a widow, with eight children, in default of a fine of £6 0s Dd. Her offence was to sell fruit valued at 7d on Sunday to a plainclothes constable. The woman, who was supporting her . two youngest elrldren, informed the authorities that she did not wish to defy the law, but had not the money to pay the fine. She was arrested publicly, and refused to enter the police car with a man convicted of drunkenness. Eventually she was brought to Adelaide Gaol. Her shop was closed, and neighbors took care of the children. She lias been released on payment of the fine, it is understood, Ljv her adult son.
