Beware of “Talkies” for the time being 1 This sums up the Cinematograph 'Exhibitors’ Association's report upon the first ‘.‘Talkies” exhibition in London, which was held on September 28. 'lt adds that the greater part of the. claims at present of the visionary “talkies” are entirely in the experimental stage, necessitating the mastery, of an entirely new technique and screen presentation.
At least two years will elapse before it /can definitely be answered whether dialogue films are a possibility of the future. Even the first attempts are not likely to he generally available before the end of 1929. Consequently., the association is opposed to expensive installations, necessitating a lengthy contract with one firm., for a mere loan of, apparatus, which is regarded as tantamount to again surrendering to American domination. It points out that other aiid cheaper apparatus is likely to he available? . On the other hand, the opinion is expressed that .synchronised., sound films are likelv to stay.
