WORLD OF SPORT.

POVERTY RAY TURF CLUB

SPRING MEETING TO CONCLUDE TO-DAY.,

With larger fields offering,; an excellent day’s sport is assured for the conclusion of the Poverty Bay Turf' Club’s spring meeting at Makaraka to-day. The course should be in first class condition, and there is every promise of keen and exciting racing; The first race is set. down to commence about noon. , ‘Special trains will leave Gisborne lor the course at 11.20 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the usual fleet of motor vehicles will also be available for the Transport of patrons to the course gates. The proceed•ings during the afternoon will be enlivened by selections by the Gisborne City Band., The first race, the M’atawhero Handicap, to be decided over- ,a mile, is time, to start at ] 2 noon. Six horses have paid up, but most of them have other engagements and in all probability the- scratching pen will result in speculators securing only one return from the machine. Polonett and Cool Card, if started, will carry the bulk of the investments,' Again the Hurdles has failed to fill up to expectations. Jen gave a pleasing display on Thursday and won in convincing style. That lorm will warrant him being made a very, warm favorite to-day. The, Waikanae Handicap has attracted, a. field of fifteen, which must he considered very satisfactory. Naffi finished well on Thursday and seemed unlucky not to have been further up as they crossed the line. He should be- all the better for the race. and. will be at a much shorter price today. Mon Mint is another that was not favored by the best of fortune; both should do better.

Tjhe Juvenile Handicap wnit sec several youngsters get an outing. Winnington is smart away from jthe ■barrier—always an advantage over “five.” Rich Harvest hadperformance to his credit- on the initial day. and these two look to have rosy chances.

The principal event of (the day, the Makaraka Handicap, will see a very good field line up. Singleton, Huikai, Cool Car, Superb King and Princess Nata are all useful. Cool Card will find the mile to his liking, and Superb King will make his presence felt.

Thirteen horses have paid up for the Maiden Handicap. Mangaharei and Ngahuru head the list and both will carry the confidence of many. A very fair field will contest the Waimata Hack Handicap. King Willonyx lias been awarded pride of place with 9.4. He won on Thursday with a little in hand and another should not be beyond him. Pliinmerton also has winning form to recommend him. Both appear to have good chances. The Spring Meeting of 1928 will come to a conclusion with the Farewell Handicap. The sprinters engaged are good and it seems hard to forecast the, favorite. Jeanette is an honest mare and always seems -to do her best. King Wanga is fast and the both should be thereabouts a,s the line is crossed.
