Oct. 26.. ’Following a light shower in J *the "WSathbr "Was’ ’’’dull *f(5F the match England versus South Australia to-day. The attendance was 8060. The wicket was easy, and practically unaffected by the rain. Hobbs and Sutcliffe,. the opening batsmen, showed respect for the couth Australian attack, playing quiet but interesting cricket. They took tiie scoi’e to 78 by lunch, the runs mostly being obtained kiy Sutclilio, who was the more aggressive. After a quiet, slow innings of 83 minutes, Hobbs was bowled in the last over before, lunch. England’s position became worse on the resumption, when Tyldesley fell for 15 through taking Grimmett cheaply, and Sutcliffe, whose batting had been delightfully tree and masterful, played Whitlield on. He made 76 in 104 minutes. The Englishmen’s showing was on the whole, unimpressive against the South Australian attack, which did not appear dangerous. Light showers caused an adjournment for a few minutes before tea. Attractive cricket was played by Hammond and Mead, whose placing was excellent. Hammond was brilliant. The spectators continued to see bright cricket from Mead and .Hammond. Both scored freely, punishing the bowling in all directions and picking holes in the field. After his early success in dismissing Tyldesley Grimmett was ineffective, both facing him confidently. Mead gave a chance off Wall at 27. Applause greeted Hammond’s arrival at 80, when he became top scorer. The partnership greatly improved England’s position, 100 being added in 7-j minutes. Hammond’s .aggression brought him.the century in 127 minutes. The batsmen had assumed mastery of the attack, which, at best, was only mediocre. After a partnership yielding 154, Mead was dismissed by Grimmett, who took a brilliant catch off his own bowling just before stumps.
