FIRE IN TOWN.
OUTBREAK IN UPPER. GLADSTONE; ROAD. • BRIGADE’S GOOD SAVE. While standing on the corner of Disraeli street and Gladstone road at about l-. 00 p.m. yesterdav, a young man named Mr. R. G. Scott, .noticed smoke issuing from an opening between Mr A. Beddow’s new brick shop and the old wooden one, and, picking up a. piece of stick lying in the gutter, he broke the alarin at the corner, the Brigade turning out promptly The building, which was used by Mr. Bcddow partly as a showroom and partly as an upholsterv department, was well ablaze, the inflammable upholstery materials aided bv a strong wind; burning furiously The - fire had . broken ttnough the wooden partition and the names were lickiug into The furniture m} o "i°oni ""’hen the brigade arrived. Ihe firemen, however, worked strenuously and finally effected a good save. Most of the furniture* in the showroom was removed in safetv to the adjoining premises . ; * The premises in which the fire occurred were owned by Mr. D McReagm, and except for ; the. 'back walls, did not sustain much 6tructui al damage. Mr. Beddow estimates his loss, at fully £250 above the irio which he held in tho South British office. Mr. JBeddow had been in the premises earlier in tho day, and when he left towards midday everything was apparently quito safe. * "
