OPERA HOUSE

“CHANG.”

Something uniquo will come to Gisborne in the picture “Chang,” to he shown at the Opera House on Monday, November 5. Jt tells with dramatic vividness of the fight 6f man against Nature in the jungles of Siam. Out in the heart of the jungle lives the native Kru and his wife and children. Round them in “tho forests of the night” dwell the wild beasts who ravage the rice fields and kill the domestic animals of the little family. Of these the worst is Chang, the elephant, who, in his great strength razes their frail lodging to the ground and forces them to flee to the village settlement, Here Kru warns tho tribe of tlio approach of the elephant herd, but his fears are laughed at until it is too late, and every home is smashed to the ground before the charging mob. So far the victory is with the jungle, but man is not yet beaten. Tho natives set to work with groat ingenuity and much labor to disperse the hand. They build a giant kraal, and beating no the herd by day and night, by lire and through ; flood, they drive the leaders into the, traji, and secure at least a temporary victory. “Chang” is worth seeing for tho photography alone, hut, styled as a “drama of the wilderness” it comes up to any expectations ! one might have on .that score. Not every day does one see the jungle ; as it really is; the leopard seeking, his prey; tho tiger killing his adversary ; the elephant amok, while lighter moments come with the jab borings of BiriJbo and the pet spider monkey, and the playfulness of Mother Bear with hrir baby- Tho daily life of the Ivru family, too, is full of interest, and with a film so spectacularly “different” to show, House should be assured of full houses ail the week.
