A Perth cable states that Gearv, the English cricketer, whose nose was broken on Saturday, is recovering and he has loft hospital.—Aust. Press Assn.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smith, of Tamara®-, , left yesterday on- an extended visit to Dunedin, where they will spend the remainder of. the year, Mr. Smith having disposed of* his dairy farm.
The death has occurred at Napier of Mr. J. A. Fitzgerald, ex-head-master of Maori Hill School, Dunedin, for 20 years. As he stepped on to a carnage platform at- the railway station to say farewell to his son, Dr. Fitzgerald, he collapsed, and died two minutes later.—Press Assn.
The Earl of Oxford, who has come to New Zealand for health reasons, has purchased for £12,C00 a residential. property at Manureva. comprising a house of nine rooms in grounds of fourteen acres. He will go into residence there next- month.—Press Assn.
At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Coal Miners’ Association, held in Wellington yesterday, a presentation of a valuable solid silver salver was made to the president (Col. W. D. Holgatc) in appreciation of his four years of office.—Press Assn.
Mr. Charles Shann, who has acted as inspector for the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Co.. Ltd., for the Poverty Bay and Bay of Plenty districts for the past six years, has received notice of his promotion to Dunedin to take charge of the company’s business in Otago and Southland. * He leaves Gisborne on November 4.
His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral has been suffering from an attack of influenza, witli complications. He is now convalescent, but, acting on medical advice, he is obliged to refrain from any public engagements for the present.' He wUI, therefore, be unable to attend the opening of the Royal Show at Palmerston North next week, as arranged.—Press Assn.
For the purpose of inspection, reporting on branches, and carrying out investitures, a delegation of the Order of the Hospital of Saint- John of Jerusalem embarks at London on the Oronsay on Saturday for Australia where it remains nine weeks and thence : goes to New Zealand. The personnel is Sir Jdliii Hewett, his daughter, Mrs. Atkinson, Major Colin Macßae, and Lady Macßae. Aust. Press Assn.
