This being an accepted fact every farmer.in New Zealand is interested in the welfare of his car-—the more vital the welfare, the greater the interest—and the most vital part of aii automobile is the tyres. MESSRS. JAS. J. NIVEN’S . enterprise. MINIATURE FREEZING CHAMBER FOR THE HOME. INTERESTING EXHIBITION ON SHOW GROUNDS. As a district progresses, so modern conveniences come to hand and to a certain extent the standard of a town or province is marked by up l to-date machinery, both on a large and small scale. The enterprising item of J. J. Niven is as usual well to the fore with its exhibits this year, and the firm’s stall in charge of the popular manager Mr. R. MacLean should prove a centre of attraction at the show td-day and to-mor-irow. In addition to the machinery etc., associated with the firm: a departure is made this year in the form of the famous Kelvinator Electric Refrigerator, which, in simple language, means that it. is practically a freezing chamber on a small scale, which can he installed in any home at. a low cost. The Kelvinator agency for New Zealand has recently been taken over by the firm, and already groat business has been done. Thirtyone different -types are stocked by the -firm- throughout N.Z. and the firm are exhibiting .‘J distinct models, the small size lor household use, a medium size for the larger household and large size for the country homestead, where it is required to accomodate a whole sheep or lamb. • / Kelvinator equipment consists of two parts; first the freezing unit, that goes into the compartment ordinarily used for ice; and second the mechanical unit externally located which extracts the heal, from "the 'refrigerator and thus leaves it cold. .When a .Kelvinator is in operation the freezing unit gets so cold it he-' comes thickly coated with frost. It remains cold constantly, and maintains a very low refrigerator temperature. The trays of the freezing unit are used for freezing crystallike tubes of pure ice for table use or a large number of frozen deserts, salads and other dainties. The mcchanic.-dRj unit that “furnishes cold” tofllhc freezing unit is connected bjjiwo small pines. The delicate food for hairy can be prepared for twenty-tour hour neriods instead of half a flozen times*a day. The plant is onerated entirely without water and in a hot climate such as Poverty Bay, the Kelvinator is invaluable. Food placed in the Kelvinator will remain fresh and sweet for many days, and thus save the housewife endless worry. Fish, nutter legions. bananas or any otiier foods* can bn kept side by sifie. After hearing of these desirable advantages one- naturally wonders if the cost of such a thing is unreasonably high. It is not, as may be judged from the range of prices £77 to £176. The Kelvinator withal is a handsome addition to the furniture of the .home, for it is made up in three finishes, oak, white enamel and porcelain. The whole process in connection with the Kelvinator is entirely automatic. When once the Kelvinator is in a homo it requires no attention whatever, and the temperature remains cold indefinitely. Messrs J,. -T. Niven have large stocks in hand at headquarters, but intending purchasers are advised to book their orders as seen as possible. A.S. REFRIGERATING MACHINES. For larger installations such as hotels, butchery or fish business, Messrs Niven and* Co. arc 'agents for the well-known A.S. refrigerating machine, which is also a miniature refrigerating room, but on a much larger scale than the Kelvinator. The” machine will freeze a. capacity of 180 cubic feet and will make 50 lbs of iee in four hours. It fs automatically cut off when the required coldness is' obtained and takes only a one horse-power motor to drive it. No charging is required, and there is no apparatus to get out of order. PERM.UTIT WATER. SOFTENER. The hard water in Poverty Bay, causes much inconvenience in many 1 directions, but one‘can overcome this with the Pennutit Water Softener, which will be seen at the firm’s stand. This machine has been adopted at the Cook Hospital and Old People’s Home and is giving great satisfaction. The Te Arai water, it is interesting to note, has 11 degrees of hardness, but near the Waipaoa it is is high as 31 or 32 degrees. Practically, every homestead in Hawke’s Bay has a Pcrmutit Water Softener installed and the majority of the modern homesteads in Poverty Bay are similarly equipped. , In fact, no station or homestead where‘hard water is natural in the vicinity can be considered Up-to-date without sucTi an invaluable convenience. ELECTRIC WATER HEATER, Another exhibit that will ereate considerable interest iis the “Stuart” Automatic Electric Water Heater, which is manufactured entirely at the firm’s local works. Heating water by electricity has, in the past, not been entirely satisfactory,. hut the automatic heater, which the firm are exhibiting solves the problem entirely, and a continuous supply or practically boiling water is guaranteed. The cold water is boiled over into a cylinder of whatever size is required, and when the cylinder is
full, the current is automatically switched off;/ As hot water is drawn from the cylinder the current is automatically switched on and boiling water replaces that drawn off. An automatic device has been provided to cut off the current should the cold water supply fail, and immediately the water is again available the current is nutomaticlly switched on. Being entirely automatic the heater is highly efficient nd considerably reduces the cost, .of running. The heater is fool proof and all that is required is to switch on the current and forget about it. Any size, heater can be supplied and anybody interested! in electric water heating should not fail to inspect this exhibit
