Newman, , chief Medical Officer of Health, states that._s.ick-' ness in England and Wales ; jn 1927, caused a loss of thirty million -weeks 7 work, equivalent to the whole year for .590,000 persons. The year 1927 also showed an increase of 30,000 deaths compared with 1926, principally due to- -in lluenza, and diseases of. the heart and' lungs, but Sir G. Newman is of opinion that science is steadily; gaining knowledge to combat them. Sir G. Newman strongly urges the increased consumption of milk. ; .The average consumption is under half a pint a day, but the campaign should be pressed until the average reached a pint. . ' .A r The death rate of infants, also mothers at child birth., shows no improvement in thirty years. -The only effective remedy is-ante-natal-super-vision with State aid. . -
