Fears are entertained that tlie beauty of the native bush at Lake Waikarem'oana will be marred to a considerable extent by a fire which started in a paddock at Okereru (near Lake House,) and spread to the standing bush on the opposite*, side of the . road and worked its way along the transmission line. The fire took place during the recent heavy northwesterly gales, and as there were tears it would .'spread, men from the' works at ‘Thar-Were hurriedly rushed up to cope with . it. After fighting the flames for two or three days—and with the assistance of a providential fall’of rain—the fire was got under control, though logs are still smouldering. The burnt undergrowth will always constitute a menace, especially iii the dry weather, and it is hop ed that something, will be done by the authorities to meet it.
