IS THERE ANY?

BALANCE OF BOER WAR FIND

SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS INQUIRING.

"During the last few months, says the annual report of the Gisborne branch of* the South Atrican Veterans’ Association, “we nave been endeavoring to ascertain what happened to the balance of the Boer War- Fund.. The Gisborne Borough Council were approached on the sum ject and a- reply was received that tfm balance of the money had been spent, on tlje Cook Memorial. Our contention is that part of the money was also, used by the Council, in supedit of which the Herald of -May 25 1904, reports a meeting of a committee set up to arrange about entrance gates to the Botanical Gar* dens, in anticipation of Lord Ranfurly’s visit, it says: This is the tirst of the improvements to be creeled with the money received from rue. South African War Fund,’ winch seems to bear out our contention that the money from the Fund was I’seJ for a purpose for which l.t was never intended. There is also some report of the bandstand on the rivei bank also being financed from ' this fund. The executive is making further inquiries into this question, but, as all the original trustees of the fund are dead, they find; it a very dir-fu-ult matter to get any information upon or find'anyone that can throw any light on the subject.
