Nominations closed to-day for the Commonwealth elections on November 17.
Practically all the sitting members are nominated but a sensation was» caused when it was disclosed that Mr Robert> Cook, retiring member- for Indi electorate, Victoria, a Government supporter, had omitted to nominate with the result that the Labor candidate, Mr Paul Jones, is automatically elected, and a safe Government seat is lost. Mr Jones has had no previous experience of Parliament
Three Government supporters in New South Wales were returned unopposed and two Labor members in Victoria unopposed. There will be contests in all the other States, excepting one or two electorates, also contests for the Senate seats In every State. The political parties represented are the Nationalists, Country Party nominees who stand behind the Bruce Government, official Labor candidates and almost Independents.
