The disastrous effects of the long-drawn-out Argentine meat war, which was sett fed in November, 1027 is shown in tho balanee-sheet of the Smithfield, Argentine Meat Co., for the year ended December 31. 1927. The trading loss was .•€112,737, following a loss of £137,982 in the previous year.
HIDE AND SHEEP SKIN SALE
REPORT
Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co.’s Wellington branch report; as follow. At the fortnightly sale of sheep skins, held on October 12, there was a good attendance of buyers. Competition for dry sheep skins was good at iast sale’s level of value's, hut the demand for salted lots was weak, and these showed a decline of up to If- per skin. Since last sale the hide market Iras weakened a good deal and prices to-day wore about -|d lower; while calf skins were decidedly easier in price. Tallow was very firm.

Messrs Dalgety. and Co., Ltd., report having held their spring cattle fair in the Whakatane saleyards yesterday. There was a full yarding of 1300 head 1 including a good proportion of extra good station bred bullocks and steers. The attendance of buyers was large, operators being present, from the Waikato, Rotorua, and all parts of the Bay of Plenty. Competition was very keen and everything was disposed of under the hammer at prices in advance of the, previous sales. The following prices were realised: Fresh and forward conditioned 3 and 4-yr Hereford bullocks, 90 at £l2, .37 at £ll 7s 6cl;* store conditioned 3'and 4-year Shorthorn bullocks, £9 4-Bs, £9 2s 6d, £8 17s 6d; two and. .three<-year Rolled Angus steers £9 12s ; 18-month Hereford steers. £7 14s. A scheme proposed for reorganising the share and loan capital o' William Beardmorc and Co., _ the shipbuilders, includes the writing down of 20s cumulative preference shares to 10s, and cancelling four years’ arrears of dividends; and writing down 20s ordinary shares to Is.
