The Otranto's passengers were dining when the collision with the lvilamo Maru occurred near Grimsby The contents of the tables were thrown everywhere. A second impact- occurred shortly afforwards. The Otranto was a full ship with excursionists for a trip round Norway. Many rushed on deck and donned lifebelts. Though the extent of the damage was not known there was no panic. The women were particularly calm-. The Otranto's bows suiiered the worst damage. The vessel was stationary for half an hour while the damage was being ascertained, and thereafter returned slowly to her anchorage. A special train took the passengers to the Midlands and London. The seamen aboard the Kitaino Maru were asleep in bunks. One sustained a fractured leg and spine. Pumping operations proceeded throughout, the night to keep the lvitamo Maru atloat at the mouth of the Humber, and arrangements were made to tow the vessel into Hull dock this evening.
