AUCKLAND SUBURBS SEAT. REFORM ASPIRANTS BALLOT. SIR JAMES GUNSON CHOSEN. A LESSON IN PARTY LOYALTY. .I’reais Association.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 13. Sir James Gunson was to-day selected as tho official Reform candidate for the Auckland suburbs seat at the general election.; the other three aspirants, Messrs D. B. Russell, M. Laing and B. Bunn withdrawing. The four met the Priffle Minister, Mr. Coates, following which a ballot was taken amongst them, this resulting in Sir James’s selection. They then waited on Mr. Coates to acquaint him of the result, and to ask for his confirmation. This was given, Mr. Coates congratulating the candidates on meeting and agreeing to settle their differences in such an honorable and reasonable manner. It was striking and refreshing to sec such party loyalty, ‘and ho hoped it would bq an objoct lesson to others who might think of being insistent and so throw tho election campaign from a party view into chaos by vote splitting. He congratulated Sir James Gunson on his selection.

A, Mducitr. secretary of the Whakatane branch of the Labor Party, returned to Opotild yesterday i'rofn the Coast, and stated that it is definite that he will contest the Bay of Plenty seat at tho general election in the interest of the Labor party. It is intended to hold a meeting next week to form a branch of the Labor party in Opotilci.

Matthews’ home last evening ns a deputation in an effort to , persuade'him to stand as a Reform. candidate- for the Gisborne, seat at tho forthcoming General Election. Among the speakers were Messrs. F. Toler ton, J. S. Wuuchop, FJ. T. b'odd re-11, A. Stonehy.m. D. McKea-guo and James Chrisp. Mr. Matthews, in reoly, stated that, while he greatly appreciated the honor paid him, ho could nob give his decision immediately. He would consider the matter and probably announce his decision on Wednesday.
