REFUND OF MOTORIST’S LICENSE.
BOROUGH REFUSES UAWA •COUNCIL’S REQUEST.
! A refund of a driver’s license fee amounting: to os, issued by the Borough Traffic Inspector to Mr. H. F. Barron, whose garage is i,situated in i the Uaw a county, was sought by the Uawa County Council, on the ground that the action was contrary to the regulations. Traffic Inspector Scott, in a report, explained that Barron was. one of four East Coast motorists (caught driving without licenses in the Gisborne borough during the Easter holidays.. He (the inspector) issued Barron a license in lieu of prosecution and, therefore, lie contended, the Oawa County Council was not entitled to a refund of the 5s fee. “I den’t think the council should accede to the request, as it would be creating a dangerous precedent,” remarked the Mayor. No doubt some Gisborne drivers had been caught in other centres and had to take out licenses there. The necessity of motorists procuring licenses in the stipulated time had not been suddenly jumped upon county drivers, and in this case the motorist had chosen to take out a- license in preference to being . prosecuted. The speaker disapproved of granting the request for refund, stating that, if this was done the, council would merely bei employing the traffic inspector to catch country motorists without licenses with a view to obtaining their fees. TJie council concurred, and declined to make the refund.
