HEROISM IN A QUICKSAND. STANHOPE MEDAL. The Stanhope Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society for the most heroic act of the year has been awarded to Mr Ernest T. Johnson, of 5, lUtson Street, Gorton Lane, near Gorton, Manchester. 5 - Johnson, on December 10, 1926, was working with man named Inglis in a trench at HigherCruinpsall, near, Manchester, where the subsoil was of quicksand. The trench collapsed, partly burying Johnson. Johnson could have released himself, but had he done so Inglis 5 would have been (suffocated. Johnson,, at the risk of liis life, remained where hof was and scraped the earth from Inglis’s head, so that lie i could breathe. The men were trapped for eight hours. .
