NOTES ON" THE RACING * PRINCE HUMPHREY CAUSES SURPRISE
(Special to the Times.; AUCKLAND, Jan. 3, A feature of the final day’s racing at Ellerslie was the fine performance of T. Green, who rode the last four winners, making a total of seven wins for the four days of the meeting. The next most successful jockeys at the meeting were R.. Reed, E. Keosing, A. Tinker- and* W. Rennie (hurdles), three wins> each. While favorites won the first four races to-day' and also the sixth and eight races, a . pronounced surprise was provided in the fifth race, ‘tho Royal Stakes, Prince Humphrey, the outsider of four runners, paying a double figure dividend,. while Money Order , paid the next best of the day though much smaller, in the-seventh race. , , On the strength of his good showing in the last race of the previous day, when he ran third, ( Sir Archie was made a solid favorite in• the Goodwood Handicap and lie fully justified the'confidence placed in him. Dayguard was ;the early leader, - showing the way - clown the hack to Le ChouCas, Royal Diadem,,Paper Boy, Areheno, and Sir Archie. Crossing the top, Sir Archie moved up,. find entering the straight tho order was HayguaPd, Le Clioucas, Royal Hiadeni Sir Archie, Areheno, Paper Boy. and Wenday. The Royal Stakes resulted in the two-year-old Prince Humphrey, the outsider, of , the field scoring in . decisive- fashion.’ Staglibnt'er was favorite with Eulalie, Gascony and Prince Humphrey backed in that order. Cascony was the first to show out from Eulalie, Staghunter and Prince Humphrey. Staghunter ran to the fi;ont crossing the top with Eulalie, Gascony ( and Prince Humphrey following. The order into the straight was the same. Prince Humphrey made a fine run in the straight to beat Gascony kjy threequarters of a length with Staghunter a. neck away third, and Eulalie last. ..There appeared to h© some .misapprehension regarding Prince Humphrey”s weight. ,It appeared in the racebook.s as 8.2, but the officials later announced .the weight was 7.13 This weight he carried, although a scrutiny of the conditions of the race shows the correct weight would have been 7.11. The scratching of Star Stranger left only three starters in the Clifford Plate, Rapier being backed down to a very small price. The race hardly requires description. Satrap was the early . leader with Rapier in close attendance and King Lu three lengths away. Along the back Rapier went up and he came into the straight clear of King Liy and Satrap. Rapier went on to win by two lengths from King Lu, who beat Satrap by a, neck_for second. .Paganelli was very solidly backed in the Bowen Handicap, Tea Time, Silver Mine and Aloney Order being next in request. When the field settled down High Finance was in front from Silvermine, Paganelli, Tea Time and Aloney Order. Receipt ran up crossing the top, and the order into the straight was High Finance, Receipt, Silvermine, Paganelli, Money Order, Tea Time and Paperchase. High Finance held her load until fifty yards from the post, when Money Order collared her and beat her home bv threequarters of a length. Paganelli was half a length away third.- Paperchase. was fourth. Then came Tea Time, Silvermine and King Arch. Then Mervette. was brought along to beat Speechless by two lengths, with Cynthia NCTTaIf a length hack third. Quinsilia waff fourth and then came Judge’s Box, Bombardier, and Bold Front. The stewards found that the evidence did not sustain tbe charge and found that the falling of Mundane-, -Count .Cavour, and Transformer was caused by Scat accidentally rolling on to another horse next to him, causing the latter to oo pushed on to the horses next- to the rails. They found- that the fall was accidental.-—P.A. AN “OLD-TIMER'S” TROTTING RACK.: TWENTY MILE TEST FROM HAWER.A TO PATE A.
(Special to the Times.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. A race which took place more than GO years ago was recalled by two “old-timers” as they watelling the Epsom on Saturday. Although one of the pair had struck a winnei, neither liked the modern style of trotting. In the old days, they said, men used to- ride- their horses, not drive them. Sixty years ago there was a trotting race from Hawera to Patna, a distance of twenty miles. The big, body animals of those days were real “overlandors”’ possessed of great staying powers, and the winner did tiio distance in record time. Competition .was keen **ieeauso the parties interested were a doctor and 4 military settlor, each of whom sought. to go one better than the other. One of the horses expired after- completing the. course, and his skeleton was found many years later when the sandbank opposite the Patca domain was being levelled to make' a road to Patea heads.
