KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR CYCLIST’.'' CHINESE FATALLY INJURED; CONFLICTIN'G~EV IDEXCE AT . ' INQUEST. - J PALMERSTON N„ Dec. 23, < At tlie inquiry into the circumstances- surrounding the death ot Young Foo, 71, a Chinese who died at Palmerston North Hospital as a result of injuries received through' be-, nig knocked down by’ a motor cycle at <Qhau on December IS, the evidence of the cyclist showed that the deceased, when the cycle Cas approaching, started to run across the road, hesitated and was struck, sustaining fatal head injuries.- A companion of'the deceased denied that the deceased left his side of the road, and said that tlie eyefiist did not swerve, nor sound his horn. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence., and said be did not intend to comment on the other evidence, which was conflicting. —P.A. MARINES TRAGIC END. FIANCEE WAS NOT WITNESS. AUCKLAND;, Dec. 28. The inquest on the marine, William Hill Woodruff, who met a tragic death on Sunday evening through, falling from the deck- of the warsh.p Diomede on to a log fender, was opened on Monday for identification, and is to be resumed to-morrow’. Woodruff’s father and brothers were all killed in the war. He was engaged to be married to a lady’, in England as soon as h.s service in the Dominion was completed. The g.il alio witnessed the fatality on Sunday was not Woodruff’s fiancee as previously telegraphed. She was visiting <t friend aboard, and was a strangei to Woodruff, who was on duty at the time of his death.—P.A. GIRL. BATHER DROWNED. NEW PLYMOUTH. Dec. 28. Florence Henchman, 21, single, was drowned on Tuesday evening when bathing near the base of 1. ar - tutui Two young boys, who were "Iso bathing, left the water and proceeded 'to dress. They then missed the '/irl, but the accident was not reported to the police till tins morning. A search is now being made lor the body. BODY FOUND ON FORESHORE THAMES, Dec. 28. Tlie bodv of Fanny Coldicuit, maided, daughter of Mr F. Woods, 1 names, was found on the loreshore this morning. Deceased lelt her home last night and a search failed to reveal her whereabouts ti.l children playing on the. foreshore discovered the body. Deceased hail been in a depressed state lately. P.A. SHOCKING- ACCIDENT TO THREE-YEAR-OLD BOY BOTH FEET OUT OFF BY MOWER HAMILTON, Dec. 28. Frightful injuries were sustained by the three-year-old son oi Mr anu Mrs E, Hargreaves, new arrivals, at Tirau, when tho child had both feet cut off by a mower yesterday. The child liid under the fringe of an overhanging macrocarpa hedge when the mower drawn by a horse swept underneath causing a terrible .accident. The child is reported to 1-e progressing well at the Matamata hospital.—P.A. HEROIC RESCUE OF’ GIRL BATHER • PAHIATUA, Deo. 2S. A drowning accident was narrowly averted through the presence of mind of J. H. Lister. A local baker named E, Petersen was, with his little daughter, bathing in the Mangatainoka river, when the girl got out of her depth. Peterson, who is not, a strong swimmer, endeavoured to go to her aid, but would quickly have been in difficulties himself. . Discarding only, his ’ hat, Lister rushed into the water and brought the girl to the shore. Tlie hole .at the spot is about eight feet deep, and there is a fairly strong undertow.—P.A. HOLIDAY MISHAPS NEAR . ROTORUA. ROTORUA, Dec. 23. There v.ia» glorious weathei throughout the week-end, and KiO cars were in the motor camp. The traffic was enormous. A motor-cyclist, Patrick Fernie, sustained a broken leg in a collision with a car, and another motor-cyclist, Chris. Anderson, was struck by a projecting benzine' case on a lorry’ on the main highway. He also broke his leg. v . . ‘ . Two mot Or-cars collided on the Tatipo road. One car was badly smashed, but the occupants were not seriously hurt.—P.A. MOTOR CYCLIST INJURED' TA UMAR AN UI, Dee. 28. Roy Gntbnar, a motor-cyclist, collided with a car driven by H. Simpson. at Fanthorpe’s corner. Grubnar sustained a compound fracture of the leg and was sent to hospital.— —P.A. WIDOW’S BODY FOUND' IN TANK PALMERSTON N.. Dec. 28. The body of Mrs E. Ross, ,78, a widow, was found in about 3ft of water in a concrete tank at the tiaek of her residence, Napier road, at about 0.30 a.m. to-day. The deceased lately had been worrying over the loss of her daughter, who was killed as. a result of a recent level crossing accident.—P.A. BOAT CAPSIZED. THREE YOUNG MEN.
