FUNDS URGENTLY NEEDED. APPEAL TO SYMPATHISERS. At a recent meeting' cf the Board of Directors of the Gisborne and East Const Young Men’s Christian Association, the accounts of the. year ended 30th September last were presented by the Finance Committee, and discussed in detail. v Capital expenditure :—During the j-car the following amounts were paid on account of the property in Fitzherbert Street:—Building, . £23YI, furniture and equipment, £113; balance owing on section £1100; River bank improvements, £SO; total £363u In order that the balance on the. section, £llOO, could be paid off,'an advance of £l5C'O at 6 per cent was obtained from the Public Trustee. Income and Expenditure.—All the activities' of the Association show steady, progress, and there has been no unwarranted expenditure in any direction, but it is with regret that the directors have to report that the income from all sources is quite inadequate to support the institution, and: if the association is to continue and extend it.s work njeans will have to bo found to .considerably increase the income. As will ho noted from the abridged statement of the accounts . the .income and expenditure account shows that tliorif was an excess of expenditure over the income for the year ended September 30 of £430 4s Od.

Balance Sheet.—The balance sheet shows tjiat tlie liabilities including the Public- Trustee’s mortgage amount to £1730 12s lOd, while the cash available'to meet these liabilities totals only £O2 16s Id. ’('here is also an amount of £8(32, made up of pro-mised-contributions to the * building fund still unpaid. This amount lias not been included with the assets on the balance sheet.

General'.—lt is generally recognised chat an institution such as the- Voting Men’s Christian Association cannot be self supporting in a town of the size of Gisborne during the first lew years of its existence. The usual'proceedure is to build up a sustaining membership, j.e., obtain supporters who will agree to contribute £1 Is and upwards per annum towards the funds of the association. A canvass to obtain sustaining members has been going on for some time, and the directors' believe that those approached will recognise that the work they are requested to support is a, worthy one, and will help to the best of their ability.

Funds are urgently required to p>ny off the amount owing to sundrv creditors and .to extend the building, which is at present incomplete. The work done by the Young Men's Christian Association is constructive in the real sense cf the term, and is an important factor in the welfare of the youth of the Dominion. Now that the' facts regarding the finance of the institution have been placed before the people of this district the directors trust that the public will respond to their appeal for assistance, and that the association will obtain the support necessary to enable it to continue and extend its work. An audited copy of the annual accounts, may be seen at the office ol the general secretary, Fitzherbert Street, Gisborne. Jf further information regarding the association and its activities should be required at any time, the general secretary will be pleased to supply it.
