BOXING.

NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENT

J. R. Edgocumbo—-Tom Heeney '--.-as 29 on May 18 last.

TOM HEENEY’S CHANCE

It is cabled from U.S.A. that Jack Dempsey lias agreed to light the Basque woodcutter, Paolipo, on conditions, but. nothing further about Tom Heeney has been said. There is, of course, time enough, but something more definite would be pleasant to the New Zealander’s ..friends. The feeling in Dominion boxing circles would.seem, to be that Tom would have little chaiice of defeating Tunnoy over 10 or 15 rounds, but nevertheless boxing fans here would like to see him in the ring as a challenger. Dempsey’s conditions, however, in ay prove to be a great obstacle, greater than the v “talkative” Sharkey, for there is'reason to suspect tiiat Dempsey has stipulated that ii he heats Paulino, lie and lie alone shall get first crack at Gene Tunuey. Few will deny that Dempsey fought well enough to merit a return battle with the champion, and ■i quick one at that, but it tlie conditions are as reported, Heeney is likely to be getting too old to light i)v the time bis turn conies round. If the elimination scheme is carried out on the “sudden death” principle, either Sharkey or Heeney will get a chance at the winner of the Dcnvp-sey-Paolino contest—if, of course, it over conies oft—and the winner of that will meet Tunney.—Auckland ■Star.
