ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE
POLICE! RAID MR A. OWEN’S SHOP PROPRIETOR AND ASSISTANT ARRESTED A mild sensation was caused in town on Saturd'ay when the police raided Arthur Owen’s tobacconist shop and arrested Owen on a charge of allegedly keeping a common gaming house, and also> Cornelius Patterson on a charge of allegedly assisting in the management of a common gaming house. The raid, which** took place at 2.30 on Saturday afternoon, was carried out by E'etective McLeod, plain clothes Constable Thompson, and Sergeant Dempsey. The three police officers, it is understood, watched the place for some time and then walked into the shop arresting Owen and Patterson. A large number pf betting slips and double charts are reported to have been found by the police on Owen’s desk at the top end of the counter. Both men were taken to the police station and were subsequently released on bail of £IOO each. They will appear before the Court this morning. The names of a number of bettors are also reported to have been taken by the police.
