WAIKANAE BEACH
OPPOSITION TO CONCRETE Wa4b HARBOR BOARD MAY FURTHER CONSIDER MATTER. Opposition to proceeding with the construction of the 200 ft concrete wall along the foreshore of Waikanie beach, extending from ihe rubble work at the end of the diversion wall, as authorised by the Harbor Board at a special meeting on Friday at a cost of £ISOO, was raised by a number of members of the Board who interviewed the Engineer (Mr R. Campbell) on Saturday mornm-. The deputation contended that the ■wall will net prevent erosion of Waikanae beach, and believed that the only ' means of preventing further damage by heavy seas is to extend the western waii of the diversion cut seaward. In support of their objections members maintained that a considerable length of the beach will be damaged it tne western wail of the cut is not extended below the present mark in'keeping with the eastern wall of the breakwater, which it is contended created the swirl at the end of the western wall, sleeping' sand from the beach into the cut. It is-therefore claimed that if the western wall was extended a few hundred feet that the sand drift would be stopped ami that 'instead o: eroding the beach in the vicinity of the bathing sheds it would extend the leach seaward. The Harbor Board authorities do not. desire to shoulder the responsibility for holding up the commencement of the construction of the wall, and consequently the deputation was advised to submit a written request to the chairman to convene a special meeting of the Board to discuss the question further.
